Session 2

We have selected two tales to explain to our pupils in the second session of mentorship from this blog: virolailovesreading.wordpress.com. It is a really great blog where you can find a lot of things related to literature.
These two fairy tales that we selected are called:
      - The fox and the horse.
      - The fox and the cat.

We have selected these two tales because the both of them talk about animals. We think that young kids really love animals, and it is fun for them to read tales about them. Also, the key message of these two tales is fantastic, and this is great forr the kids.

The authors of the tales:

Life and biography of The Brothers Grimm:
The Brothers Grimm were born in Hanau, Germany. Jacob was born on the 4th of January 1785 and Wilhelm on the 24th of February 1786. From early youth, until their death, the brothers were very close friends.

Their father, Philipp Wilhelm Grimm (1752 - 1796), was a lawyer. After his passing, the Brothers Grimm were able to finish their education only thanks to the generosity of their aunt. The Brothers Grimm showed their brilliant abilities while they were still young. After a graduation at the Kassel School, the Grimms continued their education at Marburg University, with the firm intention to become lawyers, following the example of their father.

The Brothers Grimm are probably the best known story tellers in the world. Many years have passed since the time Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm released their "Children's and household tales". The first Volume of Grimm's fairy tales was released in 1812, and the second - in 1814. The first and the second edition were very modest, both in appearance and capacity - there were only 83 fairy tales, compared to the 200 we know today.

Brothers Grimm kept updating their collection with newly gathered and recorded fairy tales. In their lifetime the fairy tale collection was translated into almost all European languages, while the German version already had six editions. This was The Grimms first experience of scientific studies and process of folklore and their first major success. For their exceptional scientific achievements modern researchers call them "fathers and founders of German philology."

Adapted versions of the tales:

THE FOX AND THE HORSE
The Brothers Grimm

Once upon a time, a farmer had a servant. This servant was special, he was a horse! But after three years, the horse was old and he couldn’t work for the farmer. So the farmer didn’t give food to the horse and the farmer said:

-         I don’t want you; I don’t want to see you! I am going to want you only when you bring me a lion!”

The farmer opened the door and the horse left the house.

The horse was very sad. The horse doesn’t have any house to live and it was cold. Then, the horse met a fox. The fox asked:
-         Why are you sad?

The horse replied:
-         The farmer is angry with me. Now I am in the forest alone, without a house to live. The farmer said that I am old and I can’t work. The farmer only wants me if I am stronger to bring a lion to him.

The fox helped the horse. The horse was happy. The fox shows to the horse a place to sleep. The fox had an idea. The idea was that the horse pretend to be dead.

While the horse was pretending to be dead, the fox went to the house of a lion and the fox said to the lion:
-         I know a place where there is a dead horse. You can eat the horse!

The lion was very happy! The lion will have a lot of food to eat. The lion went to the place where the horse was pretending to be dead.

Before the lion ate the horse, the lion slept. The fox tied the lion with some ropes.

So the lion was not free. The horse dragged the lion behind him. The lion roared.

Finally, the horse arrived to the house of the farmer.

The farmer looked at his servant and said:
-         You will have house and food to live for all the rest of your life! You are very strong.

The horse was very happy now. Finally he had a place to live and food to eat for the rest of his life!

One day, the cat met the fox in the forest. The cat ask to the fox: “How are you Mr Fox?”.

The fox answered him: “You are a simple cat, you can’t ask me anything! What can you do?”.

The cat said: ”I can climb the trees when dogs want to kill me!”. The fox answered: “I can do more things than you! I will teach you how to scape from dogs”.

Then, a hunter with four dogs appeared. The cat climbed a tree. The fox couldn’t and the dogs killed the arrogant fox.
